5K and 10K runs on June 6 honor legacy of Springfield area child advocate

Funds raised will support children and families in Springfield

Springfield, Mo. (June 2, 2015) - Ken Coleman dedicated his life to improving the lives of children suffering from abuse and neglect. After his death, his co-workers decided to honor his legacy with a running event for the entire community. Coleman was an avid runner.

This Saturday Great Circle will host the Ken Coleman Memorial 5K and 10K races beginning at 7:30 a.m. at Great Circle’s campus located at 1212 W. Lombard. A pancake breakfast and award ceremony will follow.

Register online at www.GreatCircle.org/events until midnight Thursday, June 4 or at packet pick up on Friday, June 5 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. or Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. Early registration is $20 for 5K and $25 for 10K. Race day registration is $25 for 5K and $30 for 10K. Courses begin and end at Great Circle’s campus. Routes loop through the surrounding neighborhood.

All participants and volunteers will receive a t-shirt provided by T-Mobile. Top three finishers in each age division will receive medals.

Kids participate, too
The event has had a positive impact on the kids served by Great Circle in several ways. Many of the children living on campus have been training for the event. Staff members organized a running club to help kids train. There has been an added focus on increasing activity levels and healthy activities in general.

Kids also have worked with volunteers from Rotaract Club of Springfield to make signs and artwork for the race course. On race day, those children who are not running will be stationed along the race route and finishing line to cheer on the runners.

Coleman was the driving force behind the Ozarks Family Resource Center emergency shelter. The shelter provides treatment and crisis intervention services for Greene County children who are removed from their homes because of a crisis situation, and programs for homeless youth.
